Roll & Count…All you need for a fun counting game is a die or dice and ANYTHING you can count!

As far as math activities for preschool go…this one is a winner! I love this counting game it is just so simple! And it combines 3 standards in one activity! Subitizing, counting, and 1-1 correspondence. First, raid your gam cupboard and grab a die or pair of dice. Next, find some toys, Legos, beads, or anything you can count. Then, roll the dice, count the dots, and count out that many items!. In short, it’s a perfect math activity and requires very little prep…plus, kids love it!

Math Activities for Preschool: Making Patterns

Got Blocks? Make a pattern!

To begin with, this low-prep activity is simple…and so effective. Just bring out your Legos or any other blocks and you are set! This is a great activity because it is easy to differentiate. For instance, if a child can make an AB pattern with one hand tied behind his back, make it more difficult! Start an AABB, ABB, or ABC pattern and see if they canker it going. Additionally, you could clap a pattern, move your body in patterns, get creative!

Make a Number Line

To begin with, making a number line can be a lot of fun, secondly, it can be a real challenge. First, just write numbers 0-10 (or higher) on index cards or pieces of paper. If you use firm paper you can save these number cards for other activities too. Next, mix up the number cards and help yoour child costruct a number line. In fact, if you have the space…write the numbers on full-size pieces of paper and make a giantt number line down your hallwayn or across a room!

Numeral ID

Where’s the heart?

I love doing this activity with my kiddos in my classroom. So, I created a simple at-home version! Use the number cards from your number line activity. Then, cut out 2-3 heart shapes that will easily fit behind the number cards. (draw a little face on them to make them cute and give them some personality) next, ask your child children to turn the other way while you hide the hearts.

Now, the important part is that they cannot just turn over the cards. This game is all about numeral identification. Explain that they will need to name the number and you will lift it to see if the heart friends there! Give them a turn hiding the hearts too…they love it!

Draw & Cover!

Another great Numeral ID Game is “Draw and Cover”. To begin with, you can use the same number cards you made for other activities…which is less work for you! Then, all you need to do is write an array of numbers 0-20, 0-15, 0-10, depending on your children’s skill level. Get out some buttons, cotton balls, checkers, or anything you have to cover the numbers. Next, place the number cards face down, draw a card and cover that number on your paper. Play until all numbers are covered. It really is that easy!

Number Memory

For this math activity for your preschooler, you will need to make a second set of number cards. Then, lay them face down and play a fun game of memory! One helpful teacher hint: use only 6, 8, or 10 cards at a time. More than that and the success rate will be so low your children will lose interest!

More Math Activities for Preschool

The above photos give will give you even more ideas to bring math easily into your day. Use plastic Easter eggs, and some small items for a guess and count game. Shake the egg, guess how many objects are inside, open the egg and count to see if you are correct. Use your number cards, a thin layer of salt on a tray and a paintbrush for a new way to practice writing numbers.

You can write numbers on a piece of paper and form that number with Legos or other objects. Lastly, put a cupcake tint to good use. Make some number labels-one for each space in the tin. Then, count some small beads, cheerios, or anything you can find, into each space.

These are just a few of my favorite ideas. I have used each one for math centers in my classroom and I know kids will enjoy them. The more you can keep learning hands-on, the more successful you and your children will be!
