Scaredy Squirrel activities are a fantastic way to stretch a favorite story! To tell the truth, Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt is among my favorite books in my classes! As a result, any activities that bring Scaredy Squirrel into my classroom are going to be a big hit! Not to mention the literacy, science, and writing opportunities they bring!
Scaredy Squirrel Activities: Sorting
In the book “Scaredy Squirrel” we learn that this squirrel has a list of things he is afraid of. Because of this, I made a fun comprehension activity.
I made a set of picture cards with things Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of and things he is not afraid of. Then, I made some sorting mats one with a scared squirrel, and one with a normal, happy squirrel. Subsequently, in small groups, the kids take turns sorting the cards between ‘Scared’ and ‘Not Scared’. While there are specific things from the book That Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of, we talk about why he might be afraid of some of the other things too. It goes without saying that this is a fun activity! That being the case, I get a good sense of where my students are in understanding and recalling the story too.
Scaredy Squirrel Activities: Fill the Emergency Kit!
For those who have read Scaredy Squirrel, you know how important the Emergency Kit is! To begin with, we discover that Scaredy Squirrel has this amazing Emergency Kit to protect him from the ‘unknown’. Afterward, we find out what ll the things in the Emergency Kit are used for.
With this in mind, I created a simple game that I like to call “Fill Scaredy Squirrel’s, Emergency Kit”. Much like the first game, I made a set of picture cards of things that are in the kit and things that are not. To start with, make a little Emergency Kit bag from a trimmed lunch sack and the ‘Emergency Kit’ label included. Next, just sort the cards! this is a great comprehension activity, not to mention it is a lot of FUN!
Scaredy Squirrel Activities: 2 Worksheets
After an initial reading of Scaredy Squirrel, I will show a great video from National Geographic Kids about flying squirrels. Afterward, as part of our story stretchers, the kids can color a Flying Squirrels information & fact sheet. Additionally, I have included a ‘Scaredy Squirrel Exit Plan’ writing and picture journal page. And so, as you can see, there are so many fun ways to bring Scaredy Squirrel to life and increase vocabulary and reading comprehension!
