A list Halloween books for preschool would not be complete without this great new-ish title.This beautifully illustrated book is simple, funny, and thoroughly entertaining. The pictures draw children in, make them laugh, and get them in the Halloween spirit. The text is short and simple, perfect for whole group read aloud or small group centers. I heard the desired “again, again!” after the first reading. Thank goodness it was also short…I did read it again!

2. Pumpkin Trouble

If you have read any of Jan Thomas’ books, you know they are sure to please! This one does not disappoint. Some of the familiar characters come back to share a hilarious tale of a duck getting stuck inside a Jack O’lantern! The kids love the pictures, and the text is expressive and brings the pictures to life! This one got the “again, again!” too! So we read it again! This one is a ‘must-have’!

3. Room on the Broom

There is not a Halloween book out there that brings verse and wonderful illustrations together the way this book does. It is a bit lengthy for 3-4 year-olds, but the story is so engaging they can easily sit through to the end. Couple a read aloud with the video on AmazonPrime and you’ve got a hit on your hands. I think this video is perfect for a ‘calm-down’ day during the crazy week of Halloween!

4. One Spooky Night

I got this book for my girls when they were little. They loved the book for its filmy tissue overlay pages that make the illustrations look as though they are covered fog. My classes have loved the this story as well, for the same reasons. The story itself is simple and cute, but it is the book itself that is special alone its own. This is one not just to enjoy reading, but to treasure for years to come!

5. Creepy Carrots

When I first saw this book, the title itself intrigued me…I HAD to take a closer look. Two pages in and I was hooked! This one is sure to become a classic. This book is fantastic for Halloween, but can be read at any time during the year. The kids love it, and it is the genesis of a few of my favorite centers!

6. The Monster’s Monster

I love this cute story about some tiny monsters trying to make a huge, scary monster to terrify the town. They follow their Frankenstein-like creation through the town only to be surprised that all he wanted was a donut and a peaceful day on the shore. It is a story about friendship and how things are not always as they seem. It is a bit lengthy for really little kids, ages 4-6 will love it!

7. Leonardo, the Terrible Monster

Halloween books for preschool don’t necessarily have to be just Halloween books. This one is by Mo Willems…if you have been teaching preschool for any length of time, you know that Mo Willems will never let you down! This story is also not just for Halloween, but it is a great time to add it to your read-aloud! Leonardo is a terrible monster…terrible at being a monster, that is. Leonardo searches for the most scaredy-cat kid he can find to scare the ‘tuna salad’ out of him. He ends up making a best friend along the way! This story is continued on in “Sam, the Most Scaredy-cat Kid in the Whole World”. Kids can relate to both Leonardo and Sam. Mo Willems always has a way of working a message into his books in a fun and funny way. Add this one to your library any time of year!

8. Inside a House that is Haunted

Halloween books for preschool should be fun and have fantastic, spooky illustrations!This is another one of my own daughter’s favorite Halloween books. Also told in very, this book adds on to the verse with each page. The text repeats with pictures to help children begin to read along with you. The ending is quite a surprise!

9. Ten Little Pumpkins

The cover of this book has a Jack O’lantern with reversible sequins…so it is fun from the start. This counting book has adorable illustrations, and is ideal for math centers. I use my mini erasers…give each child ten, and count down with the book! I have had so much success with this one…I’m doing it tomorrow!

10. Go Away Big Green Monster

I can’t tell you how much I love this book! Ed Emberley has come up with some great books for kids, but his first was his best! I remember my daughters being fascinated watching the monster being built and disassembled as we read this book over, and over, and over again! Now my preschool and prek kids do the same thing. I love watching their faces as they try to figure out how the book works. We always finish the first telling with an art project which becomes our bulletin board for the season. The parent’s love it so much, this year a mom knew it was coming up the week her son was sick and asked for the book and the pieces to make it at home. That was a proud moment for this tired teacher!
