Preschool Construction Activities teach all about measuring, shapes, letters numbers, and tools and trucks for building.
Preschool Construction activities and centers provide opportunities to teach about useful tools, amazing trucks, and building… and of course, shapes, measuring, letters, vocabulary, and some great crafts! Accordingly, I fill the week with trying out tools, measuring everything from the tables to the hallway, and tons of great books and stories. With this in mind here are a few ways to have fun, and learn through play this busy theme.
Preschool Construction Activities: Crafts
As you can see, these crafts are a fun way to learn about tools and trucks. Furthermore, a lot of these crafts serve a dual purpose. For example, Shape Trucks teach about the trucks the kids love, as well as basic shapes! Another thing I like to teach in this unit is the name of tools and how we use them, so of course the “My Toolbox” craft builds on and reinforces that knowledge.
Additionally, the most important thing to learn about construction is safety, so making a hardhat is another craft with more than one purpose. Instructions and templates or these crafts are in my All About Construction 5-Day Lesson Plan for Preschool, Pre-K and K. (along with some fun and simple STEM ideas too!)
One of My Favorite Construction Bulletin Boards
Turn your Shape Trucks into the cutest Construction Bulletin Board EVER!
Kids love big Construction Trucks. I created these trucks as a way to bring a shape review into my construction theme. There is so much learning and practice in these shape-matching trucks, but it’s the details added by the kids that make them so adorable! The parents love seeing them at pick-up and drop-off too!

Preschool Construction Activities centered around STEM are a great way to bring multiple standards and concepts together. For that reason, these STEM & math activities and centers are some of the best I do with my class all year. In short, bringing activities that combine movement, building, tools, number sense, comparing, counting and measurement together in one unit is amazing!
Moreover, the activities are also a lot of fun and provide ample opportunity to learn at play. Add these great centers to all the building going on at the block table and sensory bin and you’ve got an engaged and happy class!

Acting Out The 3 little Pigs
Overall, Preschool Construction activities for Literacy can be a bit tricky. Even though this unit lends itself more to math, I like to review basic skills and add a lot of unit vocabulary. Consequently, the best discovery I made is to add an in-depth study of The 3 Little Pigs to my Construction Unit.
As you know, in the story, the building of the 3 different houses, which house is the strongest, and the time it takes to build a sturdy house teaches so much about construction. Not to mention, all the versions of the story available to compare make it perfect! Therefore, I always end the week with a center devoted to acting out the three little pigs…and the kids LOVE it!
In addition to the 3 Little Pigs, I like to review letters, letter writing, as well as a bunch of rhyming and vocabulary activities. In other words, get creative and have fun with this unit in your literacy centers too!
Add Books to Round Out Construction Literacy
As you can see, not all my Construction Books are about Trucks and Tools! In this unit, remember that our hands are tools, that a box can be whatever you imagine, and every building begins with a great Architect and Engineer!
You can find EVERYTHING you need in my Construction Lesson Plans in my TPT store.
Enjoy!
