In this video, we’ll explore five effective steps to address this behavior and help children develop better impulse control and self-regulation. 1. Observe: Learn what triggers the hitting. Notice any patterns to time of day, hunger, overstimulation etc. Understand the importance of observing the situation before reacting. 2. Name the Emotion: Discover how to recognize and reflect back the child's feelings. (avoid "I" statements) 3. State Expectations: Understand how to communicate acceptable behavior and your classroom expectations clearly. 4. Preteach & Model: See how modeling and teaching desired behaviors on an ongoing basis can make a difference. 5. Offer Choices & Consequences: Find out how to give children choices while outlining consequences in a calm, constructive manner. As a teacher, parent, or caregiver, it’s essential to remain calm and collected. Remember, children don’t hit to annoy or upset us; it’s a sign of their own struggles.
