1. Observe: Learn what triggers the hitting. Notice any patterns to time of day, hunger, overstimulation etc. Understand the importance of observing the situation before reacting.
2. Name the Emotion: Discover how to recognize and reflect back the child's feelings. (avoid "I" statements)
3. State Expectations: Understand how to communicate acceptable behavior and your classroom expectations clearly.
4. Preteach & Model: See how modeling and teaching desired behaviors on an ongoing basis can make a difference.
5. Offer Choices & Consequences: Find out how to give children choices while outlining consequences in a calm, constructive manner.
