Winter Books for Preschool and Pre-K: Nonfiction

Although this isn’t technically nonfiction, it is a wonderful book about what happens above and below the ground in winter. This is a fantastic book for teaching about animals in winter!

I usually begin my winter unit with this short book. This book is developmentally appropriate and gives a great introduction to winter weather.

I like to pair this book with either ‘Sneezy the Snowman’, or ‘Snowmen at Night’. Add some snowman-themed centers…and you have an entire day dedicated to snowmen!

This book by Gail Gibbons is a little word-y, but it is wonderful for teaching about snow and snowy weather. Probably more appropriate for Pre-K.

This book has some beautiful winter photography. Just the right amount of words and some wonderful pictures to hold the interest of even the earliest learners.

This book is fantastic for 3-4 year old preschoolers. Cute pictures and just the right amount of information.

Another great overview of Winter perfect for preschoolers.

Winter Books for Preschool and Pre-K: Fiction

This is an all-time favorite book for Winter. Ezra Jack Keats draws us into Peter’s wintry neighborhood with wonderful pictures. The text is simple and so relatable for kids. I center a lot of my teaching around this book.

This fun winter book is perfect for early readers with its simple text and bright, wonderful pictures. I remember this book from my own childhood. I loved the snowman ‘Ned’ and his journey from snowball to puddle in the sun.

This is my new favorite for Winter. Almost no words, just wonderful expressive faces and expressions of glee! The kids will LOVE it too!

If you aren’t reading Sneezy the Snowman to your class…you don’t know what you are missing! The kids are simply delighted by Sneezy and end up ‘reading’ along with you …no matter their age!

Who doesn’t love Bear and all his adorable friends? This one does not disappoint! This book is perfect for teaching about hibernation as well as building on past knowledge. This is always a classroom favorite.

One more in Kevin Henkes seasons series! The illustrations are marvelous and draw the kids into the text. This book gives us a preview of what to hope for in Spring as well!

Lois Ehlert always finds a way to mix art with learning. I love using this book as a literacy/art center. We read the book, then the kids create a snowman out of some ‘good stuff’.

This book is not only well-written with amazing illustrations, it also has hidden pictures on each page that automatically make for a fantastic story stretcher. The author and illustrator live in the same neighborhood as my school, so the scenery is familiar to my class, which just adds to the fun!

My class loves every book in this series. Usually I make or find props to retell this story with my ‘Old Lady’ puppet. No matter the theme, they can’t wait for these books!

This book is another fantastic book illustrating how even the smallest among us can find ways to help out. The kids love this theme, and they also are fascinated with snowplows…so it is perfect!

This wonderful book brings the beautiful color and style of illustrations of the Snowy Day, with a different twist. The illustrations are beautiful and offer some diversity, which is always welcome and needed!

This almost colorless book is absolutely beautiful! With very few words, it brings the magic of the first snow to life in a simple and lovely way! It has become one of my favorite winter books. It is a fantastic price in paperback…don’t miss this one!

This book is also part of a series that say goodbye to one season as we say ‘hello’ to another. I love how the illustrator starts the books with the same scene as the ending . The kids love it when I point it out…it becomes a bookshelf favorite after it has been read during story time!

There are so many amazing winter books out there! These are just a few of my favorites!
